The majority of the people take two meals daily, one in the morning and the other at sunset. Only well-to-do families have a third meal (breakfast) early in the morning. The meal is made up of wheat, cooked pulses or vegetables, milk, and buttermilk (Lassi). Eating “Landi” is common during the winter.

DRESS AND ORNAMENTS

The common dress of the people is “Shalwar and Qamiz” with turbans tied over the head. The women wear a wrapper and a long shirt reaching to the knees. Women of the middle and upper classes wear ornaments made of gold.

DWELLINGS

The majority of the houses in the district are built with mud. In some cases stone-pitched walls and enclosures are used. Thatched roofs made out of dried shrubs and bushes are common. These are plastered with mud and supported beneath by wooden beams honed out of the trunks of the Shinay trees. The tribal chiefs however live in fort-like pakka houses in the midst of orchard and cultivated lands. Some businessmen in towns also live in pakka houses. However, RCC construction is gaining momentum and most government buildings are privately constructed accommodations made out of concrete.

OCCUPATIONS

Agriculture and horticulture-based trading are the major occupations. Flock owing is second in importance.

GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES

The greater part of the district is mountainously intersected by the Zhob valley. The valley is an immense stretch of the alluvial plain. The hills mainly belong to the Toba Kakar range and lie in the north and northwest of the district. The principal ranges are Toghar, Azak, Baliaraghar, Spinghar, Shorghar, Churmaghar, Kand, Surghund, Marzaghan, Malkand, Sraghar, Sharan, and Sakir. THE TOTAL AREA OF THE DISTRICT IS 11,600 SQUARE KILOMETERS.

ENVIRONMENT

The environment of the District in general is free from air pollution caused due to heavy traffic or industrial emissions. Though, Dust storms caused by extreme temperatures and low atmospheric pressure (which can continue from a few minutes to hours) can cause air pollution concentrated in dust particles and pollen. Soil erosion is rare, although water-logging and salinity have ruined some land in the district. Water pollution by chemical items is also rare. Water pollution in the case of water tanks and stored water is caused by animals and/or insects. This happens in areas irrigated by Canal waters. In rural areas, water may be polluted by ill hygienic use of water resources and use of the water source by wild/domestic animals. The living conditions in rural areas vary as to access to the area from communication and irrigation networks. Drinking water is a carrier of various water-borne diseases such as Hepatitis, Gastrointestinal diseases, diarrhea, etc.
